Sweetened Condensed Milk with Oat milk (Vegan)

Sweetened Condensed Milk with Oat milk (Vegan)

This homemade vegan sweetened condensed milk requires only three ingredients, is exceptionally easy to prepare, and is entirely dairy-free. Versatile in use, it can enhance everything from morning coffee to ice cream, and it stores well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

I love being able to make my own sweetened condensed milk. I have trouble finding anything other than coconut based condensed milk and I don’t always want my baked goods to have a coconut flavor. Coconut has its place but not in everything.

It takes 3 ingredients and 45 minutes. I make mine with oat milk because it has a very neutral flavor that can be used in anything, but you can use whatever milk you like. The beauty of making it at home is that you have complete control over how it tastes, you decide how much to make, what milk you want to use and how sweet you want it to be. You also have the opportunity to add some flavor like cinnamon, almond extract, chocolate or give it a fall spice flare. Your taste buds are making all the decisions, have fun with it. Please make and enjoy.

  • Allow it to come to a boil and then turn the heat down, allowing it to simmer until it has reduced by half. This will take about 45 minutes. Stir occasionally to keep from burning. It will start to thicken slightly and become a more caramelized color.
  • Once it’s reduced by half, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla until combined. Pour into a heat-safe container and let it cool. Once cooled, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it should keep for up to 2 weeks.

  • Hi Tiffany! I made this recipe and it cooled into a rock. What did I do wrong? It looked like yours until I let it cool.

    • Hi Alex, I am so sorry you had trouble with the recipe. My 1st thought is that it was cooked down too much. When mine starts getting down to a desirable thickness, I pour it into a measuring cup, if I get anywhere from just under 1 cup to 1 1/4 cups, I am good. If I get more than 1 1/4, I put it back on the stove top to cook down more. The longer you cook it, the thicker it will become, the more moisture you cook out of it will cause it to the thicker and harder as it cools. If you tried this with anything other than oat milk, I can’t guarantee how it will turn out. Use the 45 minutes as a gauge, your pot and your stove can change things. Please let me know if you give it a try again, I hope you do. I am here if you have any other questions.
