What you will need:
I love making my own sweetened condensed milk, especially since it’s tough to find anything beyond coconut-based versions, and I don’t always want that flavor in my baking. Coconut has its place, but not in everything. This recipe comes together with just three ingredients in about 45 minutes, and I use oat milk as the base for its mild, neutral taste.
Ingredients:
- oat milk
- cane sugar
- vanilla extract

How to:
This sweetened condensed milk is super simple to make. Start by combining the milk and sugar in a medium pot. Place the pot over medium heat bringing the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat bringing the mixture to a simmer, maintaining the simmer until the mixture reduces by half – you want to end up with 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk. As the mixture is reducing, it will become darker and thicker. Make sure to stir the mixture regularly as it is simmering and reducing. Once the mixture has reduced by half, remove the pot from the heat and add the vanilla extract, stirring well.
The beauty of making sweetened condensed milk at home is that you have complete control over how it tastes, you decide how much to make, what milk you want to use and how sweet you want it to be. You also have the opportunity to add some flavor like cinnamon, almond extract, chocolate or give it a fall spice flare. Your taste buds are making all the decisions, have fun with it.
Alright, let’s get started. Please make and enjoy!

Oat Milk Sweetened Condensed Milk
Ingredients
- 2 cups oat milk
- ¾ cup cane sugar
- ½ tbsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Pour the milk and sugar into a medium pot, place it over medium heat, and stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.

- Allow it to come to a boil and then turn the heat down, allowing it to simmer until it has reduced by half- you want to end up with 1 cup of condensed milk. This will take about 45 minutes. Stir regularly as the mixture is reducing. It will start to thicken slightly and become a more caramelized color.
- Once it’s reduced by half, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla until combined. Pour into a heat-safe container and let it cool. Once cooled, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it should keep for up to 2 weeks.

Hi Tiffany! I made this recipe and it cooled into a rock. What did I do wrong? It looked like yours until I let it cool.
Hi Alex, I am so sorry you had trouble with the recipe. My 1st thought is that it was cooked down too much. When mine starts getting down to a desirable thickness, I pour it into a measuring cup, if I get anywhere from just under 1 cup to 1 1/4 cups, I am good. If I get more than 1 1/4, I put it back on the stove top to cook down more. The longer you cook it, the thicker it will become, the more moisture you cook out of it will cause it to the thicker and harder as it cools. If you tried this with anything other than oat milk, I can’t guarantee how it will turn out. Use the 45 minutes as a gauge, your pot and your stove can change things. Please let me know if you give it a try again, I hope you do. I am here if you have any other questions.
