Homemade Muscovado Sugar
Looking for a sugar that is very dark, very strong and adds a nice little upgrade to any recipe that calls for brown sugar? Give muscovado sugar a try.
Until a few years ago, I had no idea what muscovado sugar was or that it even existed. I came across a recipe that used it one day and off I was to find out what it was and where I could find it. I read something describing it as “brown sugar on steroids” and I have to agree. . It was dark, moist, sweet and oh so strong. After ordering it 2 or 3 times, it dawned on me that I could make it at home myself and that is exactly what I did.
Sugar and molasses are all it takes. To make it dark, rich and strong (like the muscovado sugar I purchased from Amazon) I found that adding 1/4 cup molasses to 1 cup of sugar works for me. The beauty of making it yourself is that you can make it as dark and rich as you desire. I will warn you, I have noticed that the homemade version has a stronger molasses flavor than the store bought version, so keep that in mind when you are deciding what recipes to add it to.
Please, make and enjoy.
Homemade Muscovado Sugar
Ingredients
- 1 cup cane sugar
- 4 tbsp molasses
Instructions
- Place 1 cup of cane sugar in a bowl, add the 4 tablespoons of molasses to the same bowl and mix until well combined. I use my fingers rather than a fork, it keeps the molasses from clumping up.
- Feel free to use less molasses if you are looking for a lighter brown sugar. The 4 tablespoons gives me a very dark, very strong final product. Exactly what I am looking for.
